Madison & Spirit
Horse walking away but always in our memories

Spirit

The Beginning

You may have noticed that the image of the Paint Draft mix is featured throughout our site—this is no accident. Spirit’s journey is at the heart of our mission.

Her owner faced significant life changes, and then the Echo Mountain Fire brought even more chaos into Spirit’s world. She and her companion, Bold, were relocated to a barn outside their hometown. Like many displaced animals, their care fell short of what they needed—especially as older horses already struggling with weight loss.

We found them while caring for our own horses, who had also been affected by the fire and placed in temporary housing. Amidst the overwhelming number of animals in need and too few hands to help, Spirit’s soft nature and bold, unwavering gaze made her stand out. After a couple of weeks, I noticed that she and Bold weren’t receiving visits, nor was anyone scheduled to pick them up.

After persistent inquiries, we tracked down their owner. A few calls and one trailer ride later, Bold and Spirit came home with us.

Sadly, Bold was diagnosed with cancer and, already weakened by weight loss and age, was unable to survive the ordeal. Spirit deeply mourned his loss. She needed intensive, personalized care—including a dedicated feeding plan—to regain her strength.

Now to the Good Stuff

Spirit lived up to her name in every way. If you’ve ever had one of those horses—the kind with an unshakable presence—you’ll understand. She could be ridden by anyone, anywhere. Mountain trails, urban roads—nothing fazed her.

She carried flags, rode with multiple riders, and adored children. Oh, the kids—she loved them. She would sing when you came up the driveway and meet you at the gate, always eager for attention. And if you dared to ride another horse on the trails instead of her, she made her disapproval well known.

During a vet visit for routine care, we learned that Spirit was well into her 30s. Adjustments to her care plan focused on weight gain, but you’d never have guessed her age from the way she interacted—with both horses and humans. She had an undeniable zest for life.

Tragically, an accident in the pasture cut her time short. She joined Bold, and the loss is felt every day.

The Plan

Spirit’s story left us asking: How many other horses—and their owners—are out there, simply needing a safe place due to circumstances beyond their control?

Not all rescues involve abuse cases. Not all owners have abandoned their horses forever. Sometimes, both just need a reset.

From this realization, ECSF was born—a sanctuary for horses like:

  • Spirit & Bold, who were loved but whose owners needed help.

  • Gemma & Jasper, who needed safety and sanctuary.

  • Sky, who still had life to give and needed a place—and a human—to call their own.

Our mission is simple: To provide a safe, compassionate home for horses in transition. Because every horse deserves a chance, no matter the circumstances.

Our Programs & Initiatives

Rescue & Rehabilitation

We rescue neglected, abused, and at-risk equines, providing them with the care, rehabilitation, and love they deserve. Through our dedicated team of volunteers and professionals, we work to restore their health, trust, and dignity, ensuring they receive the second chance they need.

Education & Outreach

We believe that education is key to preventing equine suffering. Our workshops and resources help horse owners, the community, and law enforcement understand:

  • Proper horse care and responsible ownership

  • Recognizing signs of abuse and neglect

  • How to take action and make a difference

By raising awareness, we empower individuals to become advocates for equine welfare.

Community Support

We recognize that caring for horses can be challenging, especially for those facing financial or logistical hardships. That’s why we offer assistance, resources, and support to horse owners in need. Whether it’s providing feed, veterinary care, or temporary shelter, we strive to ensure every equine has a safe and secure home.

Advocacy & Collaboration

We work at local, state, and federal levels to develop and implement policies that protect equines and promote their well-being. Through partnerships with government agencies, advocacy groups, and other stakeholders, we push for meaningful, lasting change in equine welfare.

Veterinary Care & Forever Homes

Every equine deserves access to quality veterinary care. We provide:

  • Medical treatment, vaccinations, and health checks for horses in need

  • A commitment to finding loving, forever homes where rescued horses can live out their days in comfort and happiness

At Equus Caballus Surrender Foundation, our work is fueled by a deep love and respect for horses. We invite you to join us in our mission to create a world where every equine is safe, healthy, and cherished.

Together, we can make a difference.

Thank you for your support!

Our Story

We are a dynamic mother-daughter duo fueled by a lifelong passion for horses. Danielle's adoration for these majestic creatures. Danielle was ignited by her father's

affinity for racehorses and race cars, fostering a love

for speed that runs deep in her veins. Conversely,

Danielle's mother instilled in her a reverence for

the tranquility of slow-paced trail rides and slow

determined training methods. Providing

her with a harmonious blend of experiences in the

equestrian world.

This rich tapestry of equine influences has been

passed down to Danielle's daughter, Madison, who

is currently immersed in her studies of animal

science at Oregon State University. Madison's heart beats for the gentle giants of the equine world, particularly drawn to the grace and power of draft horses that prefer to amble at a leisurely pace. In Madison's philosophy, steadiness reigns supreme, embodying the notion that a measured approach often yields the most rewarding outcomes.

Despite their differing perspectives on speed, Danielle and Madison have found a perfect equilibrium in their equestrian pursuits. Their unique combination of skills and preferences allows them to excel in working with horses of all tempos, whether it be the lightning-fast sprinters of the racetrack or the patient plodders of the trails.

Beyond their shared love for horses, Madison harbors aspirations in the field of veterinary medicine. Currently gaining valuable experience working alongside both small and large animal veterinarians, she eagerly awaits the opening of veterinary school applications, with plans to embark on the next chapter of her academic journey in 2025.

As a family deeply rooted in the equestrian community, we are committed to nurturing the well-being of horses and fostering a deeper understanding of their needs. Through our unwavering dedication, we strive to leave a lasting legacy of compassion and respect for these magnificent creatures, shaping a brighter future for generations of horse lovers to come.
